Teachers: Helping Students with ADHD

These classroom-based practices have proven to be generally effective for students with ADHD. Accommodations should be tailored to the individual needs of the student. Teachers are encouraged to implement accommodations that are practical and reasonable, based on mutual agreement between the teacher and the student.
  1. Use eye contact when giving/repeating directions
  2. Check (initial) student planner before he/she leaves class
  3. Place student close to front, away from friends
  4. Clearly describe how classwork should be organized in notebooks and binders
  5. Allow test retakes without homework pre-requisites
  6. Provide review sheets or study guides prior to tests
  7. Allow extra time to complete homework assignments without penalty
  8. Write homework assignments on the board with approximate time estimates
  9. Post homework assignments on your website
  10. Shorten/reduce homework assignments when possible
  11. Break large assignments/projects into small parts
  12. Give reasonable credit for partially completed assignments
  13. Use a variety of methods to assess skills and knowledge
  14. Provide frequent encouragement and positive reinforcement
  15. Pair student with capable and supportive peer helper
  16. Help students prioritize missing assignments
  17. Encourage students to use flex periods
  18. Communicate frequently with parents and/or other supporting adults
